What is it you do?
“The Domaine de Villers-Ste-Gertrude, with its long history of involvement in social tourism and many years of operating as an encounter and residential centre (CRH), is located in the picturesque village of the same name, built on the heights above Durbuy. The natural stone buildings of various sizes allow us to welcome visitors of all kinds - families, groups, associations, schools, etc. - all year round. Surrounded by a 4-hectare arboretum and close to hiking footpaths, this enchanting setting has enormous appeal for lovers of nature and of fine old buildings.”
What prompted you to seek "Famenne-Ardenne UNESCO Global Geopark Partner" status?
“What motivated us to pursue partnership were the close links between the aims of the Geopark and what our association was set up to achieve. We are keen to add value to our region and play a part in its development, and to adopt an eco-responsible approach. As of last year, the estate has embarked on a global approach to ecological transition. Our new policy is founded on an eco-responsible programme setting out ambitious objectives and initiatives to be achieved over the next four years.”
What is your approach to sustainable development and environment friendly practices?
“Our association has adopted an approach to ecological transition that affects every single one of our different fields of activity. In concrete terms, we have signed up to the Green Deal for sustainable canteens, which means we encourage the use of fresh local produce while at the same time making every effort to reduce food wastage and waste. We also organise Oxfam breakfasts promoting Fair Trade products.”
