As you probably know, Beauraing is also known for the apparitions of the Virgin Mary said to have taken place in 1932 and 1933. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary appeared on more than 33 separate occasions times to five schoolchildren from Beauraing: Fernande, Gilberte, and Albert Voisin; and André and Gilberte Degeimbre. The story goes that when Fernande asked the Virgin Mary, “Why do you come here, to Beauraing”, Mary answered, “So people will come here on pilgrimages”. In total, 24 pilgrimage routes were devised, 3 of which are accessible with a mobility scooter, 9 to pedestrians, 18 to cyclists, and some to a combination of these.
The spot where the apparitions took place, the Aubépine, is accessible night and day. The votive chapel, place of contemplation and prayer located in the centre is open daily from 8.30am to 7pm. The other sanctuaries are open on request.
